The history of science and technology is full of examples of ideas that emerged long before technology and society were ready to accept them. Charles Babbage’s mechanical computer, Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone, Nikola Tesla’s radio‑controlled devices, Jules Verne’s space projectile, Edmond Becquerel’s solar cells, Norbert Wiener’s cybernetics, and flying cars — all these projects once seemed too bold, and sometimes even downright fantastic. But it was precisely these projects that laid the foundation for future discoveries and revolutionary changes.
Why do brilliant inventions sometimes get forgotten for decades? What prevents them from coming to life — the lack of materials, infrastructure, funding, or society’s unreadiness? And is it possible that today’s “unattainable dreams” — quantum computers, thermonuclear fusion, or Mars colonization — will become as commonplace in a hundred years as a phone or a solar battery?
In the presentation “Forgotten Inventions That Were Ahead of Their Time,” we will try to understand why a brilliant idea cannot be realized if the ground for it is not yet ready, and how forgotten projects from the past pave the way to the future. Enjoy watching!
