World No Tobacco Day is an international commemorative day officially established by the United Nations. The day is celebrated annually on May, 31. It was proclaimed in 1988 by the World Health Organization at the 42nd session of the World Health Assembly.

Tobacco use is the most significant preventable cause of death, and currently, according to WHO, leads to the death of one in ten adults in the world.

Smoking is a very common addiction. In 90% of cases, smoking causes nicotine addiction, which is why tobacco is called a household drug.

The goal of World No Tobacco Day is to reduce tobacco addiction and to educate society about the harmful effects of tobacco on health.

According to the UICC, today 30% of all cancer deaths are related to smoking. Reducing tobacco consumption by half will make it possible to save 170 million lives by 2050. Smokers lose about 18 years of potential life, which is a huge social loss for the society.
