Emil von Behring was a German medical doctor, bacteriologist, immunologist, serologist, and creator of anti-diphtheria serum. He became the world's first recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He received it in 1901 "for his work on serum therapy, mainly for its use in the treatment of diphtheria, which opened new paths in medical science and gave doctors a victorious weapon against disease and death."
