The Day of Unity of the Peoples of Belarus and Russia is an Important Date in the Life of the Union State RSS

On April 2, 1996, the Agreement on the Community of Belarus and Russia was signed. A year later, on March 5, the Agreement on the Union of Belarus and Russia was signed. On December 8th, 1999, the Treaty Establishing the Union State was signed in Moscow, along with the Action Programme of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation aimed to implement the provisions of the Treaty Establishing the Union State. The Union was ratified by the Russian State Duma on 22 December 1999 and the National Assembly of Belarus on 26 January 2000. On the latter date the Treaty and the Union came into effect.

The main aims of the creation of the Union were to improve the living standards of the peoples, strengthen friendship and partnership relations between Belarus and Russia in social, economic, military, political, cultural and other spheres, ensure sustainable development of the states.

"Our successes show that the peoples of Belarus and Russia are united in their goals, bound by strong fraternal ties and faithful to the common historical memory," the President said.

Prior to the holiday, the Library staff members held a thematic conversation "Friendship Without Borders" with 1st year students of the Mental Health Faculty, dedicated to the Day of Unity of Belarus and Russia.
