Now, as in the distant past, the duty of doctors is to save lives and alleviate the sufferings of patients. The duty of doctors is to respect their patients and do everything possible to help them.

The first attempts to use anesthesia were known in the times of ancient civilizations. Despite this, progress in this area was very slow.

At the beginning of the XIX century, patients were very scared of surgical operations. Anesthetics were unknown until 1842, so patients had to endure unbearable pain. The fear of pain forced surgeons to work quickly, which often caused errors and high mortality.

The first successful steps in suppressing pain belong to the outstanding surgeon and obstetrician from Scotland, James Young Simpson, who first used chloroform as an analgesic in obstetrics and surgery. He was the first doctor to demonstrate the anesthetic properties of chloroform in humans and help popularize its use in medicine.
