35 years ago, the whole world was shocked by the terrible news about the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (Chernobyl NPP). In a short time, the name of the small Soviet city of Chernobyl became the personification of a horrific man-made disaster for the whole world. On April 26, 1986, the reactor exploded, releasing radionuclides equivalent to 50 atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima. Millions of people suffered severely.

The rebellious "peaceful atom" covered huge territories with a black wing of radiation, turning fertile lands into a zone of desolation. People’s lives were divided into two halves: before and after the accident. The consequences of the tragedy are not only socio-economic and environmental, but also psychological. The echoes of the Chernobyl disaster will be heard for many more decades. That is why the history of this disaster and overcoming its consequences deserves to be known and remembered by people.

Periodical Editions and Rare Books Department invites you to see the ‘Chernobyl: Our Memory and Pain… 26.04.1986’ presentation.
